Chicago, IL October 14, 2013 — Marketing EDGE (formerly Direct Marketing Educational Foundation) today announced that Lin Liu of the University of Southern California (USC) and Xi “Alan” Zhang of Georgia State University are the co-winners of its 2013 Shankar-Spiegel Dissertation Proposal Award.
This prestigious award, now in its sixth year, recognizes doctoral candidates from accredited programs with the best dissertations in the area of direct/interactive marketing. The award was presented yesterday during the Marketing EDGE Direct/Interactive Marketing Research Summit.
“Everything we do at Marketing EDGE is focused on supporting the next generation of leaders in this field and this award honoring outstanding research conducted by doctoral candidates is no exception,” said Terri L. Bartlett, president, Marketing EDGE. “This year’s award is particularly important given Ted Spiegel’s passing earlier this year. Doctoral student research support was near and dear to Ted, and we are honored to offer this level of support this year and every year.”
Liu’s winning proposal, titled “Online Shopping Intermediaries: The Design of Search Environments,” was chaired by Anthony Dukes. Professor Dukes says, “Lin is a true scholar – willing to listen and learn from others so that he can give back through the effort of his own research.”
Dissertation Chair, Dr. V. Kumar (VK) says what makes Alan unique is that “he is persistent until he finds a way to solve the challenging problems posed by big companies. He is genuinely interested in creating new knowledge.” Zhang’s winning proposal is entitled “Managing a Profitable Interactive Email Marketing Program: Modeling and Analysis.”
“The goal of the Shankar-Spiegel Award is to inspire leading-edge research in direct/interactive marketing that will have a strong impact on the field’s future. The winners and their advisors deserve to be congratulated on rigorous and relevant forward-looking research,” said Award namesake, Venkatesh “Venky” Shankar.
