Federal—Patent Reform

  • December 2013: DMA submitted a set of comments to the FTC on the proposed 6(b) information requests to patent assertion entities. Specifically, DMA mentioned what we have heard first hand from member companies about getting patent trolls to go away.
  • December 2013: Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)’s Innovation Act was passed by the House of Representatives by a 325-91 vote. DMA actively lobbied in favor of the passage of Goodlatte’s patent reform bill as part of the Stop Patent Abuse Now (SPAN) coalition.
  • July 2013: DMA joined the Stop Patent Abuse Now (SPAN) coalition to ask members of Congress for a bipartisan response to the problem of patent assertion entities, or patent trolls.
  • June 2013: FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez announced the FTC’s plans to investigate patent assertion entities, or patent trolls, under Section 6(b) of the FTC Act. DMA agreed with the FTC fact-finding mission to better understand how patent trolls operate.
