The US Commerce Department announced this week that there are new  compliance requirements for access to the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File (DMF).  The access requirements are effective March 26, 2014 (next week.)

Marketers either directly subscribe for access or use third parties to obtain the Social Security Administration’s Death Master File (DMF) to keep their lists current to properly remove deceased names. This is a very important compliance requirement to ensure you are not contacting deceased individuals.

As a result of a new law that was enacted in December, 2013, the method for accessing the Social Security Administration’s “Death Master File” will change as of March 26, 2014.

To gain access to the most current version of the DMF as provided by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), all subscribers will now have to get certified by the Department of Commerce. (Note: Such subscribers are already aware of this requirement.)

Therefore, if you receive DMF data indirectly from a current subscriber or a third party, we recommend that you reach out to your source immediately and ask whether there are any steps that you need to take to continue to obtain DMF data from them after March 26, 2014.
