Founder Smith Browning Direct

Elizabeth B. Smith co-founded Smith Browning Direct in 1987 as a consulting firm specializing in direct marketing strategic planning for commercial and non-profit organizations. A 35-year veteran of direct marketing, Beth has extensive experience in designing and managing direct marketing programs for a wide variety of industries including: business-to-business marketers, the travel industry, financial services firms, high tech products and services companies, consumer packaged goods, pharmaceutical companies, and charitable and membership organizations.

Beth is Educational Director for the Direct Marketing Association’s Basic Direct Marketing Institute, which she has taught for the past 20 years. Her direct marketing training clients have included Nutrisystem, Google, Adobe, RCI, Time, Xerox, American Express, Microsoft, IBM, AT&T, United Airlines, Sears, Showtime Networks, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, MBNA Credit Card Division, Leo Burnett Advertising and many others. She has also taught marketers in Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South Africa.

She is an expert in customer loyalty and database marketing programs. She was previously Vice President of Marketing at Epsilon in Boston. Beth held several other positions over her 15 years at Epsilon including Creative Director and Vice President of Account Management. She has received numerous awards for creativity in marketing and has spoken internationally on direct marketing, database and relationship marketing.

Beth is the recipient of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation’s prestigious Edward N. Mayer Award. This Award is based on an individual’s lifetime contributions to the advancement of direct marketing and direct marketing education, including contribution of effective ideas, concepts or literature.

Beth is a past member of the U.S. Direct Marketing Association Board of Directors, and served on its Executive and Governance Committees. She is an Honorary Professor of the China Post & Telecommunications Technical College in Shijiazhuang, China. For 9 years she served as a Trustee and a member of the Executive Committee of the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF/MarketingEDGE), which sponsors direct marketing resources for under-graduate and graduate students and university professors.
