After playing around with Facebook’s Graph Search feature, I came across some interesting data.
Graph Search allows you to search through data that people have publicly shared on Facebook, such as what they like, where they’re located, and any public photos they’ve uploaded. Along with being able to search this data, you can also cross match it with pages, locations, and more on Facebook.
This information can be quite revealing, and in our case, somewhat astonishing. I searched “Favorite musician of people who like Direct Marketing Association – DMA” and found out that rapper T.I. is the “most liked” among people who like DMA on Facebook. Just think of the opportunities that opens up for keynote speakers at our events and awards ceremonies this year!
Taking my tongue out of my cheek, we of course realize that this data does have imperfections. Most people who like DMA on Facebook have not actually identified any favorite artists on Facebook, or shared their information publicly. So the “rapper direct marketer” persona is definitely not projectable to the full DMA membership.
Still, this could be a really interesting tool to get some insight into what consumers and fans enjoy.
Please don’t hesitate to leave comments here about your own Graph Search experiences, and, of course, to mention your favorite musical artist.
