Christopher Oswald is Vice President of Advocacy for the Data & Marketing Association. Based in Washington, D.C., Oswald is responsible for DMA government relations and advocacy efforts in Congress, regulatory agencies and all 50 states. Oswald is a member of the DMA senior leadership team, and serves on the board of the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA).
Oswald directs DMA’s various policy groups: data policy alliance, postal coalition, state affairs committee, children’s privacy coalition, telemarketing coalition, and EU data protection task force. Oswald also serves as DMA’s primary representative to federal and state legislators, agencies and industry government affairs and advocacy groups
Oswald also manages DMA’s Political Action Committee, Direct Voice PAC and directs DMA’s litigation efforts, including the DMA’s successful case before the United State Supreme Court, DMA v. Brohl.
Prior to joining the DMA, Oswald served as Director of State Government Affairs for Reed Elsevier, Inc. from 2009-2013. Based in Sacramento, California, Oswald directed and coordinated advocacy and business development efforts in the Western Region for all of the Reed Elsevier companies, including; Elsevier Publishing, Lexis Nexis, and Reed Exhibitions. He was Reed Elsevier’s primary representative to the Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG) and chaired TechAmerica’s California State Government Affairs Committee in 2013
From 2007-2009, Oswald served as Director of State Government Affairs for the Mortgage Bankers Association. Oswald developed and advocated MBA positions on issues critical to the real estate finance industry and worked closely with MBA members, state mortgage lending associations, legislators and regulators at the state and local level. Prior to joining MBA, Oswald was the Director of the Criminal Justice and Homeland Security Task Forces for the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the nation’s largest non-partisan, not-for-profit state legislators association.
As State Liaison for the National Rifle Association for five years, Oswald successfully lobbied pro-Second Amendment issues and coordinated grassroots and electoral efforts for the NRA in many states throughout the country. Oswald also served as an aide to Congressman Bill Baker, volunteered in California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s legislative office, and worked on a variety of campaigns.
Licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California, Oswald earned a J.D. and Governmental Affairs Certificate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He holds a B.A. in International Political Economy from Whitworth College. He presently lives in Alexandria, Virginia.
